Andy MacLean started Zen as a personal quest for finding the perfect tone in the early 2000’s. A lifelong musician, he’d played in bands in the 1990’s during the height of the Indy scene in Tempe AZ and the San Francisco, moving in the same musical and social circles as the Gin Blossoms, Train, and Third Eye Blind. A multi-instrumentalist who studied composition and electronic music in college, Andy became fascinated with the integral role the guitar tube amp plays in a guitarist’s signal chain and tone signature. Largely self-taught, he spent years studying the classic and more obscure tube amp circuits and design while trading tips and insights with other tube amp enthusiasts and builders.

What began as more of a side interest has evolved into a life long passion for perfecting guitar tone and keeping this unsurpassed audio technology and fountain of all sonic goodness alive and the great amplifiers born from it. If you have an amp that needs some love or a project to mod, tweak, or improve, feel free to reach out and let’s talk!
